Updated Press Release:

Trash Talk Continues at Percy Priest Lake

Lake cleanup nets 100 cubic yards of garbage – more than typical shopping malls produce in a month; more trash remains

(Nashville, TN) — Imagine how much garbage is generated at a typical shopping mall each month. Even more than that was removed last Saturday (May 3) during The Nashville Clean Water Project., the massive volunteer effort to rid Percy Priest Lake of shoreline and island trash.

With almost 600 volunteers registered, and more than 1,800 work-hours contributed free of charge, the Nashville Clean Water Project was by far the largest water cleanup in Nashville history.

“We are thrilled that the community rallied to support the clean up,” said Tim Bent, Director of Environmental Affairs, Bridgestone Americas Holding, Inc. “It was a great opportunity to help improve the environment and promote environmental stewardship for the future. When it comes to protecting our environment, we’re all in this together.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates the project’s hard cost value at $30,000, using the government’s pay scale of $18.77 per hour for volunteer service work. The actual value of the effort was close to $100,000 when including donated watercraft and fuel from Elm Hill Marina and Nashville Shores, donated food from Whole Foods, operational gifts by Bridgestone Americas and Waste Management, marketing and event management work by thinkMEDIA, and donated radio promotions by WRLT 100.1.

Season after season, trash accumulates at trouble spots on the lake’s 24 camping islands and 213 shoreline miles– so much trash that organizers have determined additional efforts are necessary. They are working on strategies to achieve even more at a second cleanup this year – the lake’s 40th anniversary year – as early as September.

In this first successful effort hosted by Nashville Shores, hard-working volunteers filled five commercial grade roll-off dumpsters contributed by Waste Management with cans, bottles, plastics, coolers, tires, abandoned barbeque grills, and other man-made waste left for dead at the city’s largest landmark. A full-sized city traffic light, a mannequin arm, and an office copier were among the odd items reclaimed from the natural area.

“This isn’t just about trash, it’s also about social and environmental impact,” said co-organizer Laurel Creech. “We have more advocates now against island litter and litter in general so the experience is transferred to every day living, not just at the lake.”

The first Nashville Clean Water Project was supported by Waste Management, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Team Green Outdoor Club, thinkMEDIA, the Cumberland River Compact, Elm Hill Marina and Bridgestone Americas, among others. More information can be found at www.CleanPercyPriest.org.
